Upgrading St Wulstan Court: A Modern Intercom System for Enhanced Safety and Convenience

Door Entry Systems

St Wulstan Court apartments consist of three individual blocks, housing a total of 42 apartments.

The existing door entry system was originally installed when the apartments were built, shortly after 1980.

Unfortunately, the installation was not of the highest standard, and several issues had arisen over time. These included damaged cables, faulty transformers, malfunctioning intercoms, and intermittent faults. Additionally, multiple companies had attempted to repair the system by adding third-party equipment, which only compounded the problems. During our survey, we also discovered exposed live 230v cables, which posed a significant safety hazard and increased the risk of fire.

SCI Management was approached to provide a quote for replacing the system and addressing the inherent issues reported by the tenants.

Our first step was to conduct a thorough site survey to determine the requirements for installing an updated solution. The goal was to provide tenants with video calling functionality while utilising the existing cabling as much as possible, thereby avoiding the need for a full rewire.

Following our assessment, we concluded that a two-wire solution would be the most suitable option. This system would not only carry the signal for voice calls but also transmit the video signal through the same cable. As a result, we selected the FARFISA ALBA DUO intercom system. This modern design enables tenants to see visitors requesting access and allows them to grant entry via the intercom system, all while maintaining security through the locked door, which can be unlocked remotely.

The two-wire solution also allowed us to address the issue of damaged cables. By identifying a single pair of cables in good working order, we were able to connect the internal intercom to the external buzzer and new camera system.

The installation was completed efficiently, enabling SCI engineers to tidy up the existing cabling. All cables leading to each apartment were neatly rehoused in a new, large adaptable box after we successfully identified and utilised undamaged cable pairs.
